  We took our map quiz over African countries today & graded them in class.
  We briefly reviewed African Empires & placed them geographically.
  Then we looked at an example of storytelling by reading from Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali.   We read this aloud with our table partner & answered questions about the griot's tale.
  As a class, we examined the Great Zimbabwe empire & completed a Writing History.

  The first several minutes of class were spent doing DEAR & binder checks.
  Today we started our new unit on African Societies. We received our new vaults & took time in class to create the foldable for it & define the first 6 terms in the vocabulary box.
  We took notes along with a powerpoint on the various geographical features & environmental concerns in Africa. We discussed 3 of the earliest African civilizations. We wrote a letter describing a journey through Africa & put it in our Unit 7 vault. This writing history assignment is homework if not completed in class.

  Today we read recent news articles from Rome &  we completed a chart to graph the articles' information in class. Then, we used this information for a Writing History assignment....Use your Investigating Rome chart to write a description of Ancient Rome. Pretend that you are an archaeologist piecing together the finds mentioned in the articles. What can you determine about Ancient Rome?

  In class, we received our new maps & vaults. Time was given in class to label maps appropriately & create a pocket for the unit's vault. A map quiz over the Mediterranean Region will be given on Wednesday, March 2.

  Today we reviewed the articles we read on Friday & the chart we completed in class. We used this information for a Writing History assignment....Use your Investigating Rome chart to write a description of Ancient Rome. Pretend that you are an archaeologist piecing together the finds mentioned in the articles. What can you determine about Ancient Rome?
  In class, we received our new maps & vaults. Time was given in class to label maps appropriately & create a pocket for the unit's vault. A map quiz over the Mediterranean Region will be given on Tuesday, March 1.
  Then we began our discussion about the origins Rome & the early republic. We looked at 2 different articles in class. We read the article silently, paraphrased the reading, & then taught the information to our neighbor. At the end of class we discussed the articles together. Your paraphrases need to stay in your binder for the next binder check.

  We briefly reviewed our notes & Writing History assignment from Thursday and then divided into groups to discuss different types of government and how they would judge a dispute. Each group discussed possible judgments, illustrated their ideas, & presented their judgment to the class. Then we each decided which form of government we agreed with the most.
  Next, we looked at the impact of the Persian Wars upon the city-states of Athens & Sparta. We briefly took notes & viewed a film in class.

  We discussed the differences & similarities of Athens & Sparta. We answered questions with our partner & read an article to discuss. Then we worked on our Writing History assignment : Would you rather live in Athens or Sparta? Why? Write 100 words & use specific details.

Today we used post-it notes to produce feedback about the Judaism project. We put our post-its on the issue bin & discussed them in class. We also wrote in our Writing History about the advantages of monotheism.

In order to explore Buddhism more in depth, we watched a film about The Buddha. You needed to follow along & take notes on any significant/interesting facts.

What are the Vedas & why are they significant?

Your Judaism Projects are due by 5:00 pm today! Please attach your documents & email them to me. I will respond when I receive your email. Therefore, if you do not get a response - resend it!

On Monday, December 13 we will review for our midterm exam.

  After today's bellwork, we worked on a writing history assignment where we wrote a CSE to determine if trade or the alphabet was a more significant achievement.
  We began our study of IndoEuropean religions by looking at the basic beliefs of Hinduism, Jainism, & Buddhism. At the end of our notetaking we took a quiz over what we've learned so far about the religions.
  Today we also received instructions for our upcoming project on Judaism. We will spend Monday, November 29 in the media center working on our projects. The final project is due on Wednesday, December 8.

Today we dug into our unit on the Indo-Europeans. We revisited our map skills with a worksheet on hemispheres & continents and we used a consensogram to measure our beginning knowledge of the IndoEuropeans.
Your new vault units were given today. We defined the vocabulary on our unit vault & illustrated 4 of the terms.
We took notes along with a powerpoint on the first two groups of IndoEuropeans. We wrote in our Writing History section to answer, what would America be like if we operated under the caste system of the ancient Aryans?

Today we began our discussion on Ancient Chinese Civilizations. We discussed the effects of geography on the cultural development in China.
We worked on geography skills by interpreting a physical map in class.
Then we took notes along with a powerpoint about the first dynasties in China.
In class, we completed a Writing History assignment comparing the rights of Chinese & American women.

Lastly, we received the new unit for our vault. We created our foldables on Ethical Systems & added an envelope for future use.

To begin class we examined a map of Ancient India and interpreted a few key concepts from it.
Then we took notes along with a powerpoint about the city-building & culture in the Indus River Civilization. Next, we wrote in our Writing History:

• Compare the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, & Harappans ability to make use of their environments.
• Identify which group you think made better use of what they had.
• Provide specific examples.

Finally, we worked in partners to complete a chart that compared all three civilizations.
Assigned homework: Complete worksheet (pg. 25) on Early River Vally Civilizations.

Study for your upcoming test (Friday, October 8). Your homework & the chart we created today will be good review tools for you. Also, look over your binder work/notes, past quizzes, & vaults.

Today your Egyptian Artifact Projects were due! Each group presented their artifact & discussed its influence on Egyptian culture. After all groups presented, we wrote a reflection in our Writing History. You need to answer the question, "What did you learn about Egyptian culture during the process of your group project?"

Next, we took notes along with a powerpoint about Egyptian religious beliefs & other achievements.
Then, we updated our Unit 1 Vaults. You should use the foldable on Egyptian Culture to create a mini picture book. Illustrate the highlights of their culture & provide a caption for each picture.

Please be prepared for a quiz tomorrow on the Mesopotamian & Egyptian civilizations.

Today we reviewed our knowledge about ancient Egyptian culture thus far. Then we took a quiz over the Mesopotamian & Nile River Civilizations. After we graded our quizzes & discussed the results, we began with our project presentations. Each group presented their artifact & explained its significance to Egyptian culture.

After all groups presented, we wrote a reflection in our Writing History. You need to answer the question, "What did you learn about Egyptian culture during the process of your group project?"

Then, we updated our Unit 1 Vaults. You should use the foldable on Egyptian Culture to create a mini picture book. Illustrate the highlights of their culture & provide a caption for each picture.

We began class by reviewing information that we learned on Friday about Egypt's government & pharaohs. We looked at a primary source about King Tut & watched 2 brief video clips about the significance of his tomb.
Next, we read about who invaded Egypt & the important contributions made during the Middle Kingdom.
Then, we took notes along with a powerpoint about the culture in Egypt - religion, society, inventions, achievements,etc.... This lead to a Writing History assignment about significant achievements & how they would have affected Egyptians' lives.
Then you were given a few minutes to break into your project groups to finalize your plans.
Remember that your group project needs to be ready to present on Wednesday, September 29!

Also, be prepared to take a quiz over Mesopotamia & Egyptian civilizations on Wednesday, September 29.

We reviewed information from Thursday's class about the 5 characteristics of civilization. Graded work was returned to you & information about AA.
In class we defined the terms on pg. 19 & illustrated 5 of those terms....this is to be kept in your notes section of your binder.

Then we read & discussed information about the city of Ur & its importance. We answered questions in pairs & wrote a paragraph in our Writing History section.

Your first mapwork was assigned as well. The map quiz will be on Thursday, September 23.

Today we explained how villages grew into cities. We began by briefly outlining pgs. 14-23 in our notes. We discussed the Neolithic Ice Man, examined a primary source, & answered questions in our notes during class. In class, we wrote 2 paragraphs about the significant consequences of the Agricultural Revolution - this stays in Writing History section of binder.


Then we read about the 5 components of civilization and discussed modern examples.
