How did the Nazca & the Moche develop rich farmlands?

  We began class with bellwork and updating the foldable on our current vault. Thus far, our study of the Americas had led us to examine the Olmec, Zapotec, Chavin, Nazca, & Moche.
  Today we continued with our study by examining the Maya, Aztec, & Inca Empires that rose up in Central & South America. We took notes along with a powerpoint & discussed the various accomplishments and beliefs of each culture.

  In class we completed a handout that outlined the unique irrigation techniques of the Maya.

Homework: Complete the handout,Aztecs Control Central Mexico. Read the source article on Machu Picchu (on the back of the handout).

We began class by updating our vaults. We described the three main migration factors & then discussed push & pull factors for each.
  Then we finished a film that depicts the environmental interaction that takes place in Mozambique, Africa. Before we watched we developed a purpose question. While we watched we took notes. After we watched we wrote a 7-10 sentence response. This is homework if you did not finish in class.
  We took an open-note quiz over our unit on Africa.

  Lastly, we received our new vault on the Americas. You need to define the 7 terms in the Key Vocabulary box & create a foldable for the VIP section.

  The first several minutes of class were spent doing DEAR & binder checks.
  Today we started our new unit on African Societies. We received our new vaults & took time in class to create the foldable for it & define the first 6 terms in the vocabulary box.
  We took notes along with a powerpoint on the various geographical features & environmental concerns in Africa. We discussed 3 of the earliest African civilizations. We wrote a letter describing a journey through Africa & put it in our Unit 7 vault. This writing history assignment is homework if not completed in class.

  Today we started our new unit on African Societies. We received our new vaults & took time in class to create the foldable for it & define the first 6 terms in the vocabulary box.

We began class by creating a concept map for the basic beliefs of Islam. This should be completed on the space provided in your vault.
  We continued with our class discussion of the varying Muslim beliefs & practices. We took notes along with a powerpoint & discussed the crisis that followed Muhammad's death, the leadership conflicts, & the split in Islamic beliefs. We examined the common sects of Islam & their typical beliefs. Then we read an excerpt from the Qur'an and discussed its possible interpretations.
  We briefly reviewed our knowledge of the Eurasian Empires & took our final unit quiz.
  After the quiz we received new map work for our unit on African Societies. Map quiz will be on Wednesday, April 27.

  We began class by briefly reviewing for our test over Ancient & Classical Rome. Your skit rubric & lines should be attached to your test in place of an essay.

  After the test you were expected to read pgs. 301-306 in your textbook & then complete a worksheet on the material.

  Your new vaults were also given out. Make sure you create the required foldable by our next class.

  Today we had DEAR & binder checks for the first few minutes of class.
  We looked at an article about the current government in Russia & completed a handout to go along with it.
  Your Unit 6 Vault were handed out in class as well. You should create a pocket/foldable where it directs you to.

  We briefly reviewed our knowledge of the Punic Wars by filling in the timeline on our Rome Vault.

  Then we watched a film on the Barbarian Wars & went over the video notes in class together.
  We discussed the environment in Rome after the wars as the republic was losing ground & took notes along with a powerpoint presentation.
  We will talk about the empire & dictators that emerge in Rome on Wednesday.

What were Pericles' main goals in leading Athens?

  Today we briefly reviewed our notes of the Golden Age in Greece. We introduced the development of philosophy & significant philophers. We examined Plato's Crito together in class & described a day in Athen in our Writing History.
  We began to examine "The Republic" by Plato. We took a few notes and watched a few short video clips about who he was, what he believed, & how his legacy lives on. Thursday we will dig deeper into The Republic and compare its ideas with those of the play, Antigone. Please bring your masks you created in English to class for this activity.

How does Athenian democracy compare to American democracy?

Use the Venn diagram provided in your vault to chart your findings.

  We briefly reviewed our notes & Writing History assignment from Thursday and then divided into groups to discuss different types of government and how they would judge a dispute. Each group discussed possible judgments, illustrated their ideas, & presented their judgment to the class. Then we each decided which form of government we agreed with the most.
  Next, we looked at the impact of the Persian Wars upon the city-states of Athens & Sparta. We briefly took notes & viewed a film in class.

  Today we briefly reviewed our notes on the geographical impact on Greece. Then we continued our notes by analyzing three important civilizations that poured into Greek culture. In your binder, create a chart illustrating the impact of the Mycenaeans, Minoans, & Dorians.
  Your new vault unit was distributed in class & a foldable of Greek forms of government should be created by next Friday.
  We continued our notetaking with a discussion on the Iliad & the Trojan War. In class, we answered #7-9 on pg. 126 in our notes & discussed alternate endings to the story of the Trojan War.
  We will take a look at various Greek myths through a partner project. Partners & assignments were given today. On Monday we will have time in the media center to research & on Wednesday, January 26 we will present our work. Each partner-team should have a mini-presentation & a product of some sort - be sure to include your sources!

Where is Greece?
  Today we began our new unit on Ancient Greece. We took notes along with a powerpoint about the important geographical features of Greece.
  New mapwork was given which focuses on the ancient city-states that divided up Greece. You will also be responsible for knowing the highest point in Greece & the surrounding seas. The map quiz will take place on Thursday, January 27.
  We continued with our notetaking to learn about the 3 different cultural influences of Greece - Mycenaean, Minoan, & Dorian. In class we drew a chart which illustrates these influences. This should be kept in the notes section of your binder.
  Our new unit section for our vaults were distributed & you must create a government foldable for it by Friday, January 21.
  Remember, on Friday we will have DEAR & binder checks so be prepared!!

Today we had DEAR & binder checks for the first several minutes of class.
The we studied & discussed the map on pg.59. We revisited our map skills with a worksheet on hemispheres & continents.
Next, we used a consensogram to measure our beginning knowledge of the IndoEuropeans. Your new vault units were given today. You need to create 1 foldable for the three religions we will cover in this unit.

Today we discussed the rise & fall of the Qin Dynasty & the Han Dynasty.

We held a class discussion on the question..."Does the end justify the means?"
We connected this with our lesson on Shi Huangdi & his governing style. Then we wrote a letter to Shi Huangdi that goes in the envelope of our Unit 2 Vault.

After we took notes about the Han Dynasty, we discussed 4 questions with our table partner & we answered them in our notes.

Today we tested over Early River Valley Civilizations.
As we waited for our classmates to finish their tests, we completed a Egyptian Wordsearch.

Then we received the new vault unit on Ancient China. We defined the first 4 vocabulary terms in our notes & created our foldables.

We will discuss the effect of geography on Chinese culture on Thursday.

Psychology

We continued our examination of Sleep & Dreams today with a film on the types & causes of dreams. As we watched we took notes, keeping a purpose question in mind. After the video, we wrote 7-10 sentencces summarizing the information & answering our purpose question.
Finally, we updated our vaults by creating mini-flashcards on sleep disorders that should be placed in the envelope in your vault.

Today we reviewed our knowledge about ancient Egyptian culture thus far. Then we took a quiz over the Mesopotamian & Nile River Civilizations. After we graded our quizzes & discussed the results, we began with our project presentations. Each group presented their artifact & explained its significance to Egyptian culture.

After all groups presented, we wrote a reflection in our Writing History. You need to answer the question, "What did you learn about Egyptian culture during the process of your group project?"

Then, we updated our Unit 1 Vaults. You should use the foldable on Egyptian Culture to create a mini picture book. Illustrate the highlights of their culture & provide a caption for each picture.
