Middle East & Major Religions

Today we prepared for our essay assignment on the Arab Spring. We will be using a CSE format which was explained and modeled in class. All essays should address 1 of the 2 claims provided. Factual evidence must be provided to support your claim. Be sure to cite your sources at the bottom of your essay in proper formatting.

After starting our essays, we finished our unit on the Middle East by taking notes on the 2 major monotheistic religions from that region. We also examined an excerpt from the Qur'an and completed our day with a Venn diagram to compare/contrast Islam & Judaism.

Remember to complete the review sheet that was handed out in class. We will take our quiz over the Middle East tomorrow and finish our essays.

  In our Friday tradition, we began class by selecting a current world news article and comparing the article to what we are learning in the classroom. Today you were asked to relate your article to our themes of movement and human-environment interaction. After reading and logging the information on our daily work logs, we took turns sharing our articles in class.
  We took our quiz today over the themes and latitude and longitude. After all quizzes were in, we took turns presenting our ABC Book of South Carolina projects.

Human Environment Interaction

  Today we took notes along with a presentation describing how and why we interact with our environment.
  We watched The Lorax - adapted from the Dr. Seuss book - to get a visualization of how we affect the world around us everyday. After watching we completed a worksheet in which we analyzed the positive and negative effects of that interaction. We also discussed the daily activities we take part in and if those activities are more helpful or harmful to our environments.

*Please remember that tomorrow we will take our first quiz.
*We will also present 4 pages from our ABC Books of South Carolina to the class before turning them in.

  Then we finished a film that depicts the environmental interaction that takes place in Mozambique, Africa. Before we watched we developed a purpose question. While we watched we took notes. After we watched we wrote a 7-10 sentence response. This is homework if you did not finish in class.
  We took an open-note quiz over our unit on Africa.

  Lastly, we received our new vault on the Americas. You need to define the 7 terms in the Key Vocabulary box & create a foldable for the VIP section.

  We began class by creating a concept map for the basic beliefs of Islam. This should be completed on the space provided in your vault.
  We continued with our class discussion of the varying Muslim beliefs & practices. We read from the book & discussed the crisis that followed Muhammad's death, the leadership conflicts, & the split in Islamic beliefs. We examined an excerpt from the Qur'an and discussed its possible interpretations.
  Then we briefly reviewed our knowledge of the Eurasian Empires & took our final unit quiz.
  After the quiz we received new map work for our unit on African Societies. Map quiz will be on Tuesday, April 26.

Sociology

  Today we finished watching The Truman Show for our analysis of the individual in society. During the movie you were expected to complete the worksheet to aid in our analysis. These were collected during class.
  Then we took a quick quiz on the material we've discussed from chapter 5.
  We will follow up with our notes on Truman after spring break! Have a great vacation!!

  Today we took a quiz over the 1st two sections of our Greece unit. We graded & discussed them in class.
  We reviewed the events of the Peloponnesian War & raced to put the events in order!
  Then we began taking notes on Greece's Golden Age. For Friday, please have your completed Writing History assignment in your binder.

Exit Work: What were Pericles' main goals as a leader in Athens?
We will focus on Plato's work The Republic on Wednesday.

Then we took a quiz over the sociological point of view & cultural diversity. We graded & discussed them in class.
For the remainder of class, we watched a film about social movements in the US including the Civil Rights Movement.

Homework: Conduct & document your social norm experiment. Be prepared to share your experiences & turn in your paper on Thursday, Feb. 10.

   We briefly reviewed the key contributors & consequences of the Persian Wars.
Then we took notes about a different war in Greece - the Peloponnesian War. We created timelines in our notes & discussed questions with our partners. Then we read Thucydides' account of the plague in Athens & discussed it in class. We watched a powerpoint about various plagues that have altered history and we created health bulletins about the Athenian Plague with our partners.

What is the connection between the larger world and you personal life referred to as?

  Today we discussed cultural conformity by identifying the values that shape & change within a society.
We took notes along with a powerpoint  & discussed the dynamics of values and social norms.
We wrote a paragraph in our Journals describing how values might change in future generations.
Then we examined 3 different cultures by studying the underlying values & ideals they appealed to.
We discussed social control and the means by which norms are enforced.

  We will begin work on a colloborative effort to research & examine the affects of social norms on our society. What happens when social norms are broken? To demonstrate this, try breaking one of the norms!    
   In class, you were given an instruction sheet with several options for norm-breaking-experiments you can try. Choose only a norm experiment that has an informal negative sanction. Document the experiment. Then, write about it & share your experience with the class. Your 1 pg paper should be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman font. We will turn in papers & share our experiments with the class on Thursday, February 10.

Sociology

Why do cultural universals exist?
  Today we presented our Rites of Passage projects. This project highlighted cultural universals & variations. Each group should have turned in their proof of research, citation page, & powerpoint.
  Next, we studied the Arapesh & Mundugamor cultures that were observed in Mead's case study of emotional dispositions. We highlighted each culture's values & norms and then attempted to answer why there were variations despite close proximity & similar societies.
  Then we used a worksheet to test our ability to distinguish ethnocentrism from cultural relativism. We answered & discussed this in class.
  For the remainder of class, we worked on Set 2 of vocabulary.

Psychology

Today we acted out our scenes of personality disorders. As a class, we discussed the disorders that were illustrated in each scenario.
Then we did an review activity with individual whiteboards.
After review, we took a quiz over Motivation, Intelligence, & Personality.
To finish class we read & discussed drug addiction & alcoholism.

Psychology

We started off with DEAR & binder checks. Today we reviewed our homework & began a discussion about Personality Disorders. We took notes along with a powerpoint, watched a short video clip about obsessive-compulsive disorder, & worked in groups to create a character sketch of someone with a personality disorder.

On Tuesday we will discuss our sketches & take a quiz.

     We started class by taking a map quiz on the physical attributes of China & surrounding Asia.
     Then we introduced Confucius by interpreting one of his sayings. "The strength of a nation derives from the integrity of the home." How does this apply to the condition of society in the Zhou Dynsasy?
     We looked at a primary source about Confucius -- his early life & his teachings. We learned about his teachings on the five important relationships & his views on family. With our table partners we created a list of do's & don't from his writings. We discussed as a class, "How did Confucius' teachings help return order?"
     After a pop quiz today over the geography and first dynasties of China, we added 2 new ethical systems -- Daoism & Legalism. We brainstormed current world issues & agreed on the top 5 issues. We will apply our new knowledge of the 3 Chinese ethical systems to interpret one of the issues.

Assigned homework: Complete the guided reading worksheet on the ethical systems & create a billboard for one of the issues. The issue should be addressed through the perspective of either Confucianism, Daoism, or Legalism. Use the chart on pg. 106 as a reference & be creative!

Psychology

Today we took a quiz over our section on Sensation & Perception. We reviewed & graded them in class.

Then we discussed the processes of Memory & Forgetting. We had a strange event happen in class which tested our memory skills....we used this surprise visit to apply the principles of encoding, storage, & retrieval.

For Thursday, please conduct the Memorization Experiment. We discussed the details in class -- subjects must memorize the following number sequence: 6, 9, 8, 11, 10, 13, 12, 15, 14, 17, 16. Bring your recorded results to class for discussion.

What are the 5 relationships Confucius put value in?

We reviewed our discussion of Confucianism & then introduced 2 new ethical systems -- Daoism & Legalism. In class, we completed a guided reading worksheet on the 2 ethical systems and we discussed them as a class. Then we updated our foldable on ethical systems in our Unit 2 Vault.

We brainstormed current world issues & worked with our partners to create a billboard for one of the issues. The issue should be addressed through the perspective of either Confucianism, Daoism, or Legalism.

Today we picked up where we left off on Friday with our discussion on the Chinese education system.
We evaluated the possible responsed of the question, "Should the US have an education system like China's?" We divided into groups and argued either for or against this education system.

Then, we briefly reviewed our knowledge of the early Chinese dynasties and we took notes along with a powerpoint on the Zhou Dynasty.
Mapwork was assigned today. There will be a map quiz over Asia on Thursday, October 29.
Also, please be prepared for a future quiz on the dynasties we've discussed thus far.

Psychology

Today we finished with our discussion on perception. We took notes along with a powerpoint on Gestalt principles of perception. We illustrated these principles by listening to a piece of music & then interpreting the principles used.
The new unit of our vaults was handed out & we created a booklet to add to it which illustrated the senses and their absolute thresholds.

Assigned homework: Read pgs. 273-280 & complete worksheet on Memory & Thought.
