Global I - A schedule

 How does Athenian democracy compare to American democracy?
Use the Venn diagram provided in your vault to chart your findings.
  
   We briefly reviewed our notes & Writing History assignment from Friday and then divided into groups to discuss different types of government and how they would judge a dispute. Each group discussed possible judgments, illustrated their ideas, & presented their judgment to the class. Then we each decided which form of government we agreed with the most.
   Next, we looked at the impact of the Persian Wars upon the city-states of Athens & Sparta. We briefly took notes, read aloud from our textbooks, & viewed a film in class.

Freshman Seminar

What is the difference between an explicit & implicit argument?

Today we finished our discussion & examination of different types of reasoning & arguments one can use when drawing out inferences from an article, media piece, etc. We looked at a video about children in India & the technology and collaboration they use to teach themselves. http://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_the_child_driven_education.html

We used computers to login & create gmail accounts so that we can begin to use various research tools including Google Docs. We will continue with this on Wednesday.

Global I - A schedule

  To begin class we answered our bellwork & then did DEAR and binder checks.

  Then we had our last few MythMaker presentations.
  We continued taking notes on city-states & forms of government. We discussed the important reformations made in Athens that contributed to the development of democracy.
 
Homework assigned is a Writing History assignment: Would you rather live in Athens or Sparta? Why? Write 100 words & use specific details.

Freshman Seminar

What is an inference?
Today we discussed the meaning & applications of inferences. We took notes along with a powerpoint about different types of reasoning (deductive vs. inductive) & arguments (explicit & implicit). At the end of class we watched a video produced by students of KSU. Use the handout that was provided in class to answer questions regarding the video. This will be due on Monday, January 31.

Global I - B schedule

  To begin class we answered our bellwork & then took a map quiz on Greek city-states.
  Then we had our last few MythMaker presentations.
  We continued taking notes on city-states & forms of government. Remember, for the next binder check you need to have the vault foldable on the forms of government filled out (monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, tyrant, & democracy).
  We discussed the differences & similarities of Athens & Sparta. We answered questions with our partner & read an article to discuss. Then we worked on our Writing History assignment : Would you rather live in Athens or Sparta? Why? Write 100 words & use specific details.

Sociology

  We briefly reviewed our notes from Tuesday and discussed the positives & negatives of ethnocentrism.
  We spent the majority of our classtime working on our Rites of Passage project.
  We will present our findings on Tuesday, February 1. Each group will be responsible for their proof of research, a citation page, & a final product (powerpoint, booklet, skit, etc...).

Global I - A schedule

  We started class by defining & illustrating any 5 terms from pg. 127.
  Then we took our map quiz on ancient Greek city-states. We graded our quizzes together in class.
  Next, we presented, the MythMakers assignment, our partner projects. Each partner set should have turned in proof of research, a Citation Page, and a final product. Presentations will be graded as a quiz grade.
  Also, we took notes regarding the city-states & their varying forms of government. We will continue our notes on Friday.

Freshman Seminar

  We worked in the media center today conducting research to answer our questions about the Dollar Bill.
In our groups, we researched & took notes. Then each group compiled their findings into an annotated bibliography. We then shared our findings with the whole class in a discussion.
We will begin our discussion about Inferences on Friday.

Global I - B schedule

   Today we presented, the MythMakers assignment, our partner projects. Each partner set should have turned in proof of research, a Citation Page, and a final product. Presentations will be graded as a quiz grade.
   Also, we took notes regarding the city-states & their varying forms of government. We will continue our notes on Thursday.
*Please remember that we will take our map quiz on Thursday (01.27.11) as well.

Sociology

   Today we discussed what culture is after reading from our book. Then we graphed it on the board and in our notes. We took a look at cultural norms & patterns and then discussed how being "politically correct" might relate to our culture's norms. We wrote 1 thorough paragraph in our journals on this topic in class. This will be checked at the next binder checks.
   Then we used post it notes to visualize cultural universals. We wrote our ideas & then organized them into categories. We took notes along with a powerpoint that took us through ethnocentrism & cultural relativism.
   Lastly, a group project was assigned regarding cultural univerals & rites of passage. We will work in groups to conduct research on how 5 different cultures differ in their practices of a major rite of passage. Birth, attaining womanhood/manhood, marriage, divorce, death, etc… Your research topic must be approved & tasks must be assigned.
   Use your research to create a booklet, PowerPoint presentation, or other approved product.We will spend 1 class in the media center working on the assignment. The assignment is worth a quiz grade (30%). Each group must have proof of research, a citation page, & a final product. Groups will present final products on Tuesday, February 1.

We will be in the media center on Thursday to work on our projects.

Why are myths an important part of Greek culture?

We briefly reviewed our map work & the guidelines for our MythMaker project. We spent the whole class in our partner sets working on the assignment. Remember, for any of the 4 options you must have proof of research (notes, printouts, rough drafts, etc...), a Citation Page, & a final product (booklet, skit lines, visual aid, family tree, etc...). We will present our MythMaker work on Wednesday, January 26.

Freshman Seminar

Class was held in the media center today in order to finish COMPASS testing & begin researching our Dollar Bill assignment. Everyone had a $1 to examine & ask questions about. Then we organized our questions into categories. We discussed the types of questions we came up with a class and what topics they cover. Then we broke into teams of 3 & each team was given a category of questions. From that category your team's task was to come up with 2-3 thorough, researchable questions. We spent the remainder of class researching these questions & we'll pick up here on Wednesday.

Sociology

  For the first few minutes of class we had DEAR & binder checks. Please make sure your binders are set up according to instructions.
  We began our vocabulary section with Set 1 of 12 terms. You had time in class to do this & it should stay in the vocabulary section of your binder.
  We reviewed the founding fathers of sociology & took notes on the theoretical perspectives. Select one of the three news passages on pg. 3 to write a brief essay (10-12 sentences) that describes how adopting each of the 3 perspectives might affect your view of the chosen passage.Consider what functionalists might focus on, the interests of conflict theorists, the interests of interactionists. If you did not finish in class it needs to be done as homework for Tuesday.

Homework: Read the Case Study on pg. 28 & answer the "Think About It" questions.

Global I - B schedule

  We continued our notetaking with a discussion on the Iliad & the Trojan War. In class, we answered #7-9 on pg. 126 in our notes & discussed alternate endings to the story of the Trojan War.
  We will take a look at various Greek myths through a partner project. Partners & assignments were given today. Tomorrow we will have time in the media center to research & on Tuesday, January 25 we will present our work. Each partner-team should have a mini-presentation & a product of some sort - be sure to include your sources!

Homework: Complete worksheet pgs. 45-46

Sociology

  We briefly reviewed our notes from Tuesday & further discussed the sociological perspective. We looked at how pyschology, anthropology, economics, political science, & history each affect sociology.
  To learn the 5 Famous Sociologists we broke into groups to research & create a "graffiti sign" for each sociologist. Your poster should have images & slogans that depict your assigned sociologist. In addition to your poster, write a paragraph summary about who your sociologist is & what he contributed.
  Tomorrow we will discuss culture!

Global I - A schedule

  Today we briefly reviewed our notes on the geographical impact on Greece. Then we continued our notes by analyzing three important civilizations that poured into Greek culture. In your binder, create a chart illustrating the impact of the Mycenaeans, Minoans, & Dorians.
  Your new vault unit was distributed in class & a foldable of Greek forms of government should be created by next Friday.

Global Studies 1 - B schedule

Where is Greece?
  Today we began our new unit on Ancient Greece. We took notes along with a powerpoint about the important geographical features of Greece.
  New mapwork was given which focuses on the ancient city-states that divided up Greece. You will also be responsible for knowing the highest point in Greece & the surrounding seas. The map quiz will take place on Thursday, January 27.
  We continued with our notetaking to learn about the 3 different cultural influences of Greece - Mycenaean, Minoan, & Dorian. In class we drew a chart which illustrates these influences. This should be kept in the notes section of your binder.
  Our new unit section for our vaults were distributed & you must create a government foldable for it by Friday, January 21.
  Remember, on Friday we will have DEAR & binder checks so be prepared!!

Sociology

Would you rather live in a society without art or a society without science?

  After reviewing our syllabus & classroom expectations, we brainstormed terms, ideas, & phrases that describe or pertain to sociology. We discussed our ideas & will compare them to what we learn about sociology in the next week.
  Next we read Why It Matters and wrote a paragraph summary on the article. We discussed the article in class. Your paragraph should be kept in the notes section of your binder.
  Then we took a a pre-quiz to review our definition of sociology & test our knowledge. We graded it in class & reviewed the results.
  Lastly, we began taking notes through a powerpoint about the 4 Truths of Sociology & the Benefits of Sociology. We will continue with our notes on Thursday.

*Remember to have your syllabus signed by a parent by Friday, January 21.
*We will have DEAR & binder checks for the first few minutes of class on Friday so be prepared!!

Global I - A schedule

Where is Greece?
   Today we began our new unit on Ancient Greece. We took notes along with a powerpoint about the important geographical features of Greece.
   We received new seats & new hall passes. Any binders that weren't checked last Friday need to be graded today.
   New mapwork was given which focuses on the ancient city-states that divided up Greece. You will also be responsible for knowing the highest point in Greece & the surrounding seas. The map quiz will take place on Wednesday, January 26.

Freshman Seminar

Today we revisited the goals we made at the beginning of the year & either adjusted them or made new goals for this semester. We will be working on the Inquiry Process in anctipation of preparing for future research projects & processes.
Today we received new seats & hallpasses.
We spent the majority of class in the media center beginning work on our COMPASS testing.
