Today we took our map assessment on African countries!
After all quizzes were turned in, our groups presented their African region. Groups were graded according to the rubric (required information, poster, & presentation). Everyone had 2 days in class to work on this mini-project. Overall, the presentations were well put together and met the expectations given!
When presentations were finished, an opportunity to complete a "replacement assignment" was given. The handout was a quick research worksheet called Christmas Around the World. The optional assignment should have been turned in before class ended; however, it will still be accepted on Tuesday when we return from break.
*All missing assignments and make up work need to be turned in as soon as possible.
Looking Ahead....
After Christmas, we will spend a little time on Asia and then begin preparations for the final. The final will be a comprehensive assessment over our last four units: Europe, Russia, Africa, & Asia.

Hello World Geography Students!
I would like to take this time to introduce myself for I will be teaching you in World Geography indefinitely. As a social studies teacher, my basic aim is to equip my students with a sufficient knowledge of the world around them and the events that have shaped it. You will have the opportunity to learn the characteristics that strongly influence a country both geographically and culturally.
Each student is a unique and complex individual. Therefore, I will use a variety of teaching methods in order to appeal to a variety of students. I do not intend on teaching students to merely memorize places and facts. Rather, I would urge them to become active learners in order to prepare them for a successful future.
I am eager to get to know you and to be a part of Lexington High School. I look forward to a great remainder of this semester!

Today we presented our Rites of Passage projects. This project highlighted cultural universals & variations. Each group should have turned in their proof of research, citation page, & powerpoint.
Next, we studied the Arapesh & Mundugamor cultures that were observed in Mead's case study of emotional dispositions. We highlighted each culture's values & norms and then attempted to answer why there were variations despite close proximity & similar societies.
Then we used a worksheet to test our ability to distinguish ethnocentrism from cultural relativism. We answered & discussed this in class.

Global I - A schedule
How does Athenian democracy compare to American democracy?
Use the Venn diagram provided in your vault to chart your findings.
We briefly reviewed our notes & Writing History assignment from Friday and then divided into groups to discuss different types of government and how they would judge a dispute. Each group discussed possible judgments, illustrated their ideas, & presented their judgment to the class. Then we each decided which form of government we agreed with the most.
Next, we looked at the impact of the Persian Wars upon the city-states of Athens & Sparta. We briefly took notes, read aloud from our textbooks, & viewed a film in class.
Homework: Complete "Warring City States" worksheet pg. 2

What is the difference between an explicit & implicit argument?
Today we finished our discussion & examination of different types of reasoning & arguments one can use when drawing out inferences from an article, media piece, etc. We looked at a video about children in India & the technology and collaboration they use to teach themselves. http://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_the_child_driven_education.html
We used computers to login & create gmail accounts so that we can begin to use various research tools including Google Docs. We will continue with this on Wednesday.
